Perplexity Unveils Email Assistant to Automate Scheduling and Inbox Triage for Gmail and Outlook
What Email Assistant does
Perplexity launched Email Assistant, an AI agent that integrates with Gmail and Outlook to automate common inbox workflows. The agent can draft replies in your tone, auto-label and prioritize messages, surface daily priorities, and handle scheduling end-to-end — from reading availability and proposing times to issuing calendar invites. The feature is available today for Perplexity Max subscribers.
How it integrates with mail and calendars
Email Assistant plugs into email threads by being cc’d (assistant@perplexity.com) or via one-click setup links for Gmail and Outlook. Perplexity’s existing native connectors for Google and Microsoft stacks let the agent search email, read calendar availability, and create calendar invites directly from a live thread. That agentic handling means you can delegate the back-and-forth of scheduling without leaving the message.
Security and compliance posture
Perplexity states SOC 2 and GDPR compliance and says user data is not used for training. For teams in regulated environments, those controls imply standard audit and data-handling boundaries, but organizations should verify calendar write permissions, data access scopes, and data loss prevention (DLP) posture before a production rollout.
How it compares to suite-native assistants
The Email Assistant overlaps with Microsoft Copilot for Outlook and Google Gemini features in Gmail, but Perplexity positions its product around agentic negotiation: the assistant conducts the entire scheduling loop within threads and leverages cross-account connectors from Perplexity’s Comet stack. That makes it a plausible drop-in for teams that prefer an external agent rather than a suite-native assistant.
Practical implementation notes
To use it, connect your Gmail or Outlook account, then cc the assistant on threads that need scheduling or triage. Typical workflows include auto-labeling messages as ’needs reply’ or ‘FYI’, generating draft replies in your style, producing daily summaries, and creating invites. Keep in mind this capability is gated to Max plan users and currently only supports Gmail and Outlook.
Limitations and checklist
Email Assistant is limited to Perplexity’s Max plan and to Gmail/Outlook support at launch. Before enabling it broadly, confirm calendar write permissions, domain compliance requirements, and whether the agent’s access aligns with your organization’s security policies.
