Meta AI Launches Llama 4-Powered Standalone Assistant to Compete with ChatGPT

Meta has launched its standalone AI assistant app powered by Llama 4, featuring social integration and voice interaction to compete with ChatGPT.

Meta AI Steps Into Standalone Assistant Market

Meta has officially launched its standalone AI assistant app powered by the latest large language model, Llama 4, at the first-ever LlamaCon developer conference on April 29, 2025. The app is designed to offer a personalized and socially connected AI experience that stands out from existing competitors like ChatGPT.

Llama 4: Advanced AI Technology

The Meta AI app runs on Llama 4, Meta’s most advanced large language model yet. Llama 4 features a mixture-of-experts architecture, which enables more efficient handling of complex tasks. It supports multimodal inputs, allowing users to communicate using both text and images, along with multilingual support for 12 languages. The model comes in two variants: Scout and Maverick. Scout offers 17 billion active parameters with a 10 million token context window, while Maverick has 400 billion parameters and supports a 1 million token context window.

Social Integration for Personalized Assistance

A key differentiator of the Meta AI app is its deep integration with Meta’s social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. This integration enables the app to customize responses based on user preferences and social context derived from these platforms. Users can also instruct the AI to remember specific details like dietary restrictions or favorite activities, enhancing future interactions with more personalization.

Discover Feed: Sharing AI Interactions

The app includes a “Discover” feed where users can share their AI conversations with the community. This feed features various prompts and responses, allowing users to explore content generated by others. To enrich this feature, Meta invited content creators like meme makers and travel bloggers to test the app and share their experiences. Although the Discover feed supports likes and comments, it currently does not include full social networking features such as follower systems or search.

Voice Interaction and Cross-Device Continuity

Voice-first interaction is emphasized in the Meta AI app, enabling natural language conversations especially useful for multitasking. This feature is currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Furthermore, the app integrates with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, replacing the previous Meta View app. This allows users to start conversations on their glasses and seamlessly continue them on their phones or desktops.

Meta’s new AI assistant app merges sophisticated language modeling with social platform data to deliver a unique and engaging user experience, positioning it as a strong contender in the AI assistant market.
