Meta Supercharges Ray-Ban Smart Glasses with AI, Apple Scrambles to Compete

Meta has enhanced its Ray-Ban smart glasses with AI-powered live translation and new features, while Apple is developing lightweight AR glasses to challenge Meta’s growing presence.

Live Translation Comes to All Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses

Starting today, all Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses users worldwide gain access to live translation capabilities. Previously a limited feature, it now enables real-time conversations translated in English, French, Italian, or Spanish. Users can download language packs to use offline, eliminating the need for Wi-Fi or mobile data. The translations are heard directly through the glasses without requiring a phone, turning Meta’s smart glasses into powerful portable communication devices.

Expanding Features and Hardware Enhancements

Meta continues to innovate beyond language translation, introducing new hardware options and AI features. The new Skyler frames come in a stylish chalky gray color with sapphire lenses. Upcoming updates will bring Instagram DMs and video calls directly to the glasses. Additionally, a live AI assistant feature will allow the device to see what the user sees and respond in real-time. Meta is also expanding its AI services globally across the EU and launching in markets such as Mexico, India, and the UAE.

Apple’s Response: Smaller, Smarter AR Glasses on the Horizon

Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly developing lightweight AR glasses as a direct response to the growing popularity of Ray-Ban Meta’s smart glasses. While Apple’s Vision Pro dominates the current high-end AR market, the company aims to create a smaller, more wearable device packed with full augmented reality functionality. Unlike Meta’s smart glasses, which currently do not support AR, Apple’s upcoming device may leapfrog by integrating advanced AR features.

The Future of Smart Glasses

Meta’s AI-driven innovations have transformed smart glasses from mere style accessories into essential tech tools for travelers, remote workers, and anyone navigating multilingual or complex environments. With Apple entering the competition, the smart glasses market is poised for rapid evolution. The focus is shifting from fashion to intelligence, with both tech giants vying to become the dominant face-worn computing platform.
