Dubai's AI Strategy Promises 30% Faster Travel and Smarter Roads
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has unveiled an AI strategy to cut travel times by up to 30%, leveraging 81 AI projects to optimize traffic and improve public transport efficiency.
AI at the Wheel in Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is revolutionizing urban mobility by placing artificial intelligence at the core of its transport system. The newly launched Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2030 aims to reduce travel time across the city by up to 30%, marking a significant leap forward in smart city development.
The Strategy and Its Scope
The RTA's ambitious plan includes 81 AI-powered projects scheduled for implementation over the next five years. These initiatives cover diverse areas such as traffic signal optimization, intelligent pedestrian systems, predictive maintenance of vehicles and infrastructure, and AI-assisted driver assessments.
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General, emphasized the strategy’s goals: enhancing human capital, building a connected AI ecosystem, and driving AI-powered transformation across all RTA services.
Clear Targets for Impact
The strategy sets measurable targets including:
- 20–30% reduction in travel time
- 25–40% increase in employee productivity
- 10–20% reduction in operational costs
- 35% improvement in customer satisfaction
- 30–50% enhancement in partner compliance
Integrating AI into Transport Infrastructure
Dubai is leveraging big data analytics and generative AI tools, such as the virtual assistant ‘Mahboub’, to create a transport system that is faster, smarter, and more sustainable. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader AI 2031 vision and builds on RTA’s existing data infrastructure, which processes 670 terabytes of transport data and over 280 data points across 49 systems.
Real-World Applications of AI
The RTA has already implemented AI in over 40 use cases, including:
- Predictive maintenance for buses
- Sentiment analysis of passenger feedback
- Forecasting parking demand
- Smart water and energy management on the Metro
An additional 45 AI use cases are under evaluation, targeting upgrades to Dubai’s public bus network and improvements in energy efficiency.
A Smarter Commute Ahead
Dubai’s AI-driven transport transformation is well underway, promising commuters a future of shorter, smoother, and more intelligent travel experiences.
